In April 2023, an internal conflict broke out in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) led by the chairman of the Transitional Council, General Al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by general Hemedti. Following the outbreak of this violent internal conflict, the CGRS suspended the processing of all Sudanese cases.
It is common practice for the CGRS to put a temporary freeze on case processing if a conflict breaks out or if a situation changes. In such situations, it is necessary to gather sufficient up-to-date and objective information before making a correct assessment. This is also common practice in other EU member states.
This assessment has now been completed and the CGRS can unblock the suspended cases. As of 26 February 2024, The CGRS will resume processing Sudanese cases from Darfur, Kordofan, Blue Nile and Khartoum. Files of applicants from the other regions will not be processed until further notice.
The situation in Sudan clearly indicates a need for international protection in the form of refugee status or subsidiary protection. An individual assessment will be done in order to determine whether nationality and claimed region of origin are established.
